In 2007, GWAII TRUST WAS SUCCESSFUL in bringing the SMFRA fund home to the Islands by creating the Gwaii Forest Charitable Trust (GFCT) to receive the original $24 million plus interest. The $25.46 million was received in March and deposited with the Gwaii Trust for investment. Only the interest generated from the Gwaii Forest Charitable Trust investments is available for spending on approved projects meeting the test of upholding the Gwaii Forest/SMFRA purposes while being charitable in nature. Creating yet another legacy for the islands communities Gwaii Forest Society is modeled after the Gwaii Trust using the same structure to represent the Islands.
